More Than Skin Deep

IPL at CūRA

Choosing an IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment at CūRA is an intentional step toward clearer, more vibrant skin. While often called a laser treatment, IPL actually utilizes a broad spectrum of light to gently target the browns and reds that cloud your natural radiance.

Our providers approach every session with the precision of an artist, ensuring your journey toward an even skin tone is safe, effective, and wrapped in luxury hospitality. In our Del Mar sanctuary, we believe that by clearing the "noise" of sun damage, we allow your true confidence to shine through.

IPL

at a Glance

Purpose: To eliminate sun spots, age spots, rosacea, and broken capillaries.

Technology: Broad-spectrum Intense Pulsed Light (IPL).

Treatment Time: Approximately 20 to 45 minutes depending on the area.

Downtime: Minimal; pigment may darken and "pepper" before flaking off in 5–7 days.

Frequency: A series of 3 to 5 treatments is recommended for a total skin reset.

The Spectrum Science

How does IPL work?

IPL is a light-based technology that delivers scattered wavelengths of light to penetrate the dermis. Unlike a laser which uses a single wavelength, IPL's broad spectrum allows it to be absorbed by two specific targets: melanin (brown pigment) and hemoglobin (redness). When the light energy reaches these targets, it converts to heat, intentionally damaging the pigmented cells or collapsed veins without harming the surrounding skin. At CūRA, we use this "photothermal" process to pull sun damage to the surface and calm chronic redness, resulting in a polished, filtered aesthetic.

What is the IPL procedure like?

Your experience begins with a high-definition skin analysis to ensure your barrier is ready for light therapy.

After applying a cooling gel to the treatment area, your provider will use the IPL handpiece to deliver quick pulses of light. You may feel a sensation similar to the "snap" of a rubber band, often accompanied by a bright flash of light (protected by specialized eyewear). This efficient procedure is delivered with the high-end service of a five-star retreat, ensuring you feel empowered and comfortable from start to finish.

The Redness Reset

What conditions does IPL address?

IPL is the gold standard for reversing the visible "wear and tear" of an active, sun-drenched lifestyle.

  • Sun Damage: Erases "liver spots," solar lentigines, and freckles.
  • Rosacea: Calms generalized facial redness and flushing.
  • Broken Capillaries: Targets spider veins and "telangiectasia" around the nose and cheeks.
  • Age Spots: Clears pigment on the hands, chest, and shoulders.
  • Poikiloderma: Addresses the red-brown mottling often found on the neck.

No Social Downtime

IPL is a "non-ablative" treatment, meaning it does not break the skin's surface. You can apply makeup and return to your social life immediately, making it a favorite for the busy, driven individual.

The "Photo-Filter" Effect

IPL creates a uniform skin tone that reflects light more efficiently. This results in a bright, "glass skin" quality that looks incredible even without foundation.

Long-Term Preventive Care

Regular IPL treatments have been shown to influence gene expression in aged skin cells, helping them behave more like younger cells. It is an essential tool in any longevity plan.

Clear Skin  Evolution

Ideal candidates are those with light to medium skin tones (Fitzpatrick types I-III) who are bothered by sun spots or redness. Because IPL targets pigment so effectively, it is generally not recommended for darker skin tones or those with a fresh tan, as the light cannot distinguish between "damage" and "natural pigment." We will review your medical history and current sun exposure during your consultation to ensure IPL is the safest, most effective path for your journey.

Recovery from IPL is mild and manageable. Immediately following the session, your skin may feel warm, like a light sunburn. Within 24 to 48 hours, brown spots will begin to darken and look like coffee grounds or "peppering" on the skin. It is vital to avoid sun exposure and resist the urge to scrub these spots — they will naturally flake off within a week. We provide a curated post-care protocol and emphasize the use of a high-quality SPF to protect your new, luminous skin.

After the initial "peppering" flakes away, you will reveal a complexion that is remarkably more even and bright. While a single session provides a noticeable refresh, the most transformative results emerge after a series of 3 to 5 treatments. With consistent maintenance and diligent sun protection, your clear, radiant skin becomes a lasting reflection of your commitment to excellence.

Defining Your Glow

Where can IPL be used?

While the face is the most popular area for restoration, IPL is a powerhouse for any area frequently exposed to the Del Mar sun. We often treat the chest (décolletage) and hands, as these areas often betray one's age even when the face is well-maintained. By treating these zones in combination, we ensure a harmonious, youthful glow across your entire silhouette.

IPL Laser Frequently Asked Questions

Most patients describe the sensation as a quick "rubber band snap." We use cooling gel and advanced handpiece cooling to ensure the treatment is very tolerable.

For significant sun damage or rosacea, we typically recommend a series of 3 to 5 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart.

No. You must avoid active sun exposure and self-tanners for at least 2 to 4 weeks before treatment. Treating tanned skin can lead to burns or permanent pigment changes.

Technically, no. Lasers use one specific wavelength of light, while IPL uses a broad spectrum (like a high-powered flashlight). This makes IPL more versatile for treating multiple colors (reds and browns) at once.

IPL removes existing damage, but it cannot prevent new damage. Daily SPF and sun-safe habits are essential to maintaining your results.
