The Science of Resurfacing

How does the CO2 Laser work?

The CO2 laser is an ablative technology, meaning it removes the outermost layers of the skin while simultaneously heating the dermis beneath. It works by delivering short pulses of high-energy light that are absorbed by the water in your skin cells, causing them to vaporize instantly. At CūRA, we utilize Fractional CO2 technology, which creates thousands of microscopic "thermal zones" while leaving bridges of untreated skin intact. This strategic approach triggers a massive wound-healing response and the formation of a brand-new collagen matrix without the prolonged risks of traditional fully ablative lasers.

What is the CO2 procedure like?

Your journey begins with a comprehensive skin analysis and a pre-treatment protocol to ensure your skin is in peak condition.

On the day of your treatment, we apply a high-potency topical numbing agent, and in some cases, utilize local anesthetic to ensure your total comfort. As the laser glides across the skin, you will hear a rhythmic clicking sound and feel a sensation of intense warmth.

Total Skin Renewal

What conditions does the CO2 Laser address?

The CO2 laser is reserved for those seeking to correct significant structural and textural imperfections.

  • Deep-Set Wrinkles: Targets "smoker's lines" around the mouth and heavy forehead furrows.
  • Advanced Sun Damage: Erases years of actinic keratosis and deep solar lentigines.
  • Pitted Acne Scars: Levels the skin’s surface by remodeling deep scar tissue.
  • Surgical & Traumatic Scars: Significantly improves the texture and color of old scars.
  • Severe Laxity: Provides a "liquid facelift" effect by contracting collagen fibers.

What are the benefits of CO2 Resurfacing?

One CO2 session can often achieve the results that would take 4 to 6 sessions of milder lasers or microneedling. It is the most efficient path to dramatic skin improvement.

Unlike non-ablative lasers, the CO2 laser causes immediate tissue contraction. This leads to a visible lift in sagging skin that continues to improve for up to six months.

This treatment essentially "replaces" your skin. By removing the damaged outer layers and building a new foundation, you are left with a texture and clarity that reflects your inner vitality.

Targeted Rejuvenation

What areas can the CO2 Laser be used?

While the face is the primary area for this deep treatment—specifically targeting the eyes and mouth — CO2 lasers are also highly effective for hand rejuvenation and treating localized scarring on the body. Because of its intensity, we map your treatment area with extreme precision to ensure a seamless blend between treated and untreated skin, maintaining your natural facial harmony.

Am I a candidate for the CO2 Laser?

Ideal candidates are those with light to medium skin tones (Fitzpatrick types I-III) who have significant aging concerns or scarring. Because CO2 is an aggressive heat-based laser, it is typically not recommended for darker skin tones due to the risk of hyperpigmentation. We will review your medical history—specifically checking for recent sun exposure or use of Accutane—during your consultation.

CO2 Laser Recovery

Recovery from CO2 is a multi-stage process. For the first 3 to 5 days, the skin will be red, swollen, and may have texture changes as the old cells move to the surface. We provide an intensive CūRA aftercare kit during this phase. By day 7 to 10, a fresh, pink "new skin" is revealed. Strict sun avoidance and high-quality SPF are mandatory for several weeks following the treatment. Plan for a "social sabbatical" during the first week of healing.

CO2 Laser Results

The results of CO2 resurfacing are nothing short of transformative. Once the initial redness fades, you will see a complexion that is remarkably smoother, tighter, and more even-toned. Because the laser triggers a long-term "collagen factory" in the skin, your results will continue to improve for 6 months and stay vibrant for years. This is the CūRA standard: a masterpiece of skin health that allows you to move through the world with unshakeable confidence.

CO2 Laser Frequently Asked Questions

We prioritize your comfort by using high-potency topical numbing and local anesthetics. While you will feel heat and pressure during the session, the procedure is very manageable with our expert pain-management protocols.

For most patients, a single CO2 treatment provides the desired results. For very deep acne scarring or advanced wrinkles, a second session may be scheduled 6 to 12 months later.

In Del Mar, we perform CO2 year-round, but you must be able to strictly avoid the sun for at least 2 weeks pre- and post-treatment. If you have an active tan, we will reschedule your session for your safety.

"Cool" lasers (non-ablative) leave the skin surface intact and require 4-6 sessions. CO2 is "hot" (ablative), removing the surface and providing much more dramatic results in a single visit.

Yes. CO2 is one of the best non-surgical treatments for skin laxity because its heat causes immediate contraction of collagen fibers.
